Where's Port Vale?
Never been to Port Vale - nor have I and I realise now it doesn't exist. Guess the club name is better than Burslem Town FC. Here are the facts:
Port Vale are based in Burslem, Staffordshire -one of the six towns that make up the city of Stoke-on-Trent. Stoke City and Crewe Alexandra are their local rivals.
Although it is widely believed that Port Vale is one of the few teams not to be named after a geographical location, the name Port Vale exists on maps predating the formation of the club in 1876, and is a reference to a valley of ports on the Trent and Mersey canal, associated with the city's pottery industry.
Oh and if you are going this pub scores 9/10:
Name: The Bulls Head
Address: 14, St. Johns Square, Burslem, Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire, ST6 3AJ [01782 834153]
A brilliant town pub; excellent selection of their own beers plus wide range of guest beers An outstandingly good pub in an underwhelming town. Cracking pint of Batemans 'Valiant'...
The flagship pub of the Titanic Brewery(no pun intentended). Two rooms and an outdoor...
You will not be charged for this service. See some of you there and you can point out to me who the new players are.

Re: Where's Port Vale?
Bit nervous ahead of this as a) Never been to a match so far away by myself before and b) The result is hardly ever positive when I go.
Still, a 10 hour round trip to a shithole to stand in a half empty stadium full of Northerners and only a couple of hundred Albion fans, to see us play for a 0-0 draw against a very poor side.
I can't bloody wait.

Re: Where's Port Vale?
Been before (promotion party) but it's decidedly underwhelming a town. Pub sounds alright though. Must check that out next time but can't make Saturday...I'll be in a sorry state by the afternoon due to a stag do...probably won't be able to focus properly on the screen for the England game either. :p
Jimmy/Roch: the stadium's half decent with a roof over the away end and reasonable acoustics...reckon you could have a decent atmosphere there. Enjoy!

Re: Where's Port Vale?
Not the best of places - but memories of the promotion party being outside the ground and all you could hear were very loud Albion songs coming from sounded like hundreds somewhere well away from the ground and so distance and hidden you could not see where the noise was coming from.
A bit like the film Zulu when you hear their sound but never see the Zulu's. A very nerving experience for the home supporters but marvellous scenes for us Albion fans. I got stuck in the home side that match which was not a terrific experience they had some crazy supporters around and we were told to keep quiet - hey it was our party!!
Would have gone tomorrow but - a) it's a 1 o clock kick off. b) Have chosen to hopefully go to hartlepool in two weeks c) England are playing d) It's Stoke!

Re: Where's Port Vale?
ok so my lad got in for free and I got in for £8 as a carer - so day started well. A couple of hundred Albion sat down in a near empty stadium with no atmosphere and watched a dull match finish 1-0. Savage seemed to play in mid field and was ineffectual. Was subbed and Elder with his first touch set up the only goal and from thre on in had a reasonable game amongst a sea of mediocrity. Actually Robinson also played quite well and seemed to be through on goal when hacked down and this led to the sending off.
Port Vale isn't as bad an area as i was led to belive but if we had lost may have thought diffrent

Re: Where's Port Vale?
Twas a good day out.
1st half was poor, Vale were the better team and had a goal disallowed (Questionable decision) and a header cleared off the line. Kuipers also produced a fantastic diving header to clear the ball when any other goalie would have just caught it in his hands.
2nd half we were much better. Wilkins put Elder on for the ineffective Savage, and it paid off immediately. Elder got the assist, as Port Vale's goalie misjudged a cross, Elder won the header and Revell stabbed it into the empty net. Vale then had a player sent off, and we began to dominate. Could and should have been 3 or 4-0 by the end.
Overall pleased with the three points and another clean sheet.
